The original gene strain that the Zerg used to evolve their Mutalisk breed came from the Dinares Sector Mantis Screamer. From the Mantis Screamer, the Mutalisk has retained the ability to travel through both air and space, but its ability to travel in vacuum or within an atmosphere is unknown. Their wings appear to be part of the propulsion in space or a stable atmosphere. Yhey also use a very unusual way of attacking, producing and projects much smaller, voracious creatures that rapidly fly between enemy targets as it disintegrates explosively.

Other lethal abilities of the Mutalisk includes the use of its fangs or spraying of the blood of the flyer. The blood is acidic, and is able to melt through even CMC Armor. Even with these spectacular strengths, the Mutalisk still has vulnerabilities as the acidic blood is just as dangerous to itself as the enemies of the Zerg and its wings are very fragile, able to be shredded even by glass.

Mutalisks are the the primary flying forces of the Zerg, being flexible and fast, working as an all-around attack/defence breed that can be used in large amounts to great effect, essential of the Swarm. If an opponent of the Zerg is not mounting a sufficient air defence, their bases or offensives are most probably going to be annihilated by the oncoming Mutalisks. Powerful air superiority will keep the flying insects at bay, as the individual creature is unable to sustain much damage. Regardless of the level of air control, they are agile and dangerous opponents on every battlefield. Against the flanks of an opponent, or just in sufficient numbers, the Mutalisks is always a threat.

These flyers are among the Zerg breeds with the least individual initiative, and can almost be observed as "lazy". This behaviour changes when they enter combat and turns into machines of blind bloodlust, making them a danger to anyone unlycky to be nearby, including itself. Mutalisks also has the uncanny ability to trace Terran transmissions to their source.

An evolved Hive Cluster can let the Mutalisks go through a metamorphosis and mutate into other flying creatures, such as the Guardian, Devourer or the Swarm Guardian. While the Zerg as a race has evolved beyond the Guardians and Devourers of the Brood War, they still utilize an advanced strain of the Guardian called Swarm Guardian.

The Mutalisk serves as the basic air attack for the Zerg, useful in early tech and later on as well. Regardless of if it is StarCraft I or StarCraft II, it also has the ability to mutate into other units. They are best when used in a large swarm, well coordinated and in tight formation.

Their special Glavie Wyrms makes their attack work differently than other unit's attacks. The first unit they hit takes the full force of the blow, but the Wyrm also bounces off to other nearby enemies, dealing damage to them as well, but at a lower rate. In total, the Wyrm bounces two times, and hit up to three targets. If there is only one target nearby, then only one target get hurt with the standard attack.

They are weak to AoE attacks such as Psionic Storm by the High Templar, or other effects that effect many units at once.

[edit] StarCraft II Unit

The StarCraft II Mutalisk is very similar to the previous incarnation, but it can now only mutate into the Swarm Guardian, a variant of the StarCraft I Guardian.

[edit] StarCraft I Unit

The Mutalisk is quite unique in the fact that it's counted as a "small" unit in StarCraft I, which gives it resistance to explosive damage, such as Dragoons and Goliaths have. As it deals normal damage, it doesn't suffer any penalties against other units, except their armor value.

[edit] Trivia

During the development of the StarCraft II Mutalisk, it was unable to fire and move at the same time, like the original one does. Chris Sigaty explained to Leord of StarCraft: IncGamers that this was really due to a bug rather than a new change. A bug in the manner that StarCraft I Mutalisk was never supposed to do that. They never got around to fixing the bug, and over time it became an integral "feature" rather than a bug. In March 2008 they were still working on how to "break" the current engine enough to alow similar behaviour of the Mutalisk. It is intended to be able to move and shoot.
