The heavily armored Terran Dropships were a vital part of Colonial defense, and are fully rated for both atmospheric and deep space flight. The daredevil pilots of these transports are charged with delivering Marine armor and infantry to any hot spot or combat zone.

[edit] StarCraft II Unit

The Dropship was present in the early builds of StarCraft II but has since been replaced by the Medivac Dropship.

[edit] StarCraft I Unit

The Dropship's primary purpose is to transport units from one location to another. To do this, the Dropship has the limited capacity of 8 Slots with each Terran units taking 1, 2 or 4 slots accordingly. Any combination of units can be loaded as long as they do not equal more then the 8 count limit. The breakdown of each unit is as follows:

A Dropship carrying two Marines, a Goliath and Siege Tank.
A Dropship carrying two Marines, a Goliath and Siege Tank.
  • SCV - 1 slot, max 8 SCVs
  • Marine - 1 slot, max 8 Marines
  • Firebat - 1 slot, max 8 Firebats
  • Ghost - 1 slot, max 8 Ghosts
  • Medic - 1 slot, max 8 Medics
  • Vulture - 2 slots, max 4 Vultures
  • Siege Tank - 4 slots, max 2 Siege Tanks
  • Goliath - 2 slots, max 4 Goliaths

While transporting units the Dropship is extremely vulnerable to anti-air attacks; if they are destroyed while carrying units all the units inside will die. It is for this reason the Dropship should always be escorted with defending units, such as Wraiths and Valkyries. If the Dropship comes under attack and is close to death, a useful tactic would be to try and unload as many units as possible before the Dropship is destroyed.

The Dropship is very useful in transporting much slower units and can also provide protection to some of the more vulnerable, and sometimes expensive, units by storing them in the Dropship's payload hangar.

Another common tactic is to use several Dropships to deploy a few Siege Tanks and/or Vultures behind the enemy's income line, or atop a nearby cliff to rain destruction on nearby units and structures.

[edit] Development

The Dropship returned as the transportation unit for the Terrans during the early development stages of Starcraft II, In early March '08 as part of the Zerg release interviews it was revealed the developers were testing a new unit that would eventually replace both the Dropship and Medic.

Not long after it was confirmed that the Dropship has been removed, their role as air transportation is now filled by the Medivac Dropship. They may appear in the map editor, but will not be available in the multiplayer aspect of the final release of StarCraft II.

[edit] Trivia

  • Mind Control can be a devastating ability for the Protoss to cast on friendly Dropships; if they are carrying units then both the Dropship and all the units it is carrying will be converted under the Protoss's command.
  • During the very first gameplay video the Dropship was shown to briefly land during the unloading of friendly units.
