Carrier

From StarCraftWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

The Protoss Carrier is a mighty ship that still lacks fire power of its own. Instead of mighty cannons mounted on the ship, it has a number of docks from which it launches Interceptors that fly out and in turn fire plasma weapons at the enemy. Carriers are especially good in larger groups, and are vulnerable to air attacks when travelling alone. They can let their Interceptors open fire on both ground and air units.

The massive Carriers serve as operations centres for leaders of the Protoss fleets. Heavily armored and shielded, carriers can punch their way through enemy blockades by unleashing flights of robotic Interceptors at vital enemy targets. These manoeuvrable, computer-guided craft tear through enemy flight formations and relentlessly strafe slower ground targets with potent plasma charges.

Interceptors are automatically manufactured and serviced inside the Carriers' bays, and a number of prepped Interceptors can be launched in rapid succession. In battle, Carriers appear to be virtual hornets' nests of activity as their agile offspring dart out to launch their attacks and retreat just as rapidly to repair any damage they sustain. Terran scientists have long yearned for an opportunity to study just how the smoothly orchestrated operations of a Carrier are achieved in detail.

Most Carriers have no weapon batteries of any kind, but their deployment of Interceptor flights makes them devastating in a ship-to-ship battle. However, a handful of heavily armed "Super Carriers" exist, most famously the Gantrithor. This was the flagship of Executor Tassadar when he led a Protoss expeditionary force in its attempts to eradicate the Zerg in Terran space. The Gantrithor was powerful enough that it single-handedly defeated an entire Terran Battlecruiser squadron under the command of General Edmund Duke. Tassadar later sacrificed himself and his ship to destroy the Zerg Overmind when it manifested on Aiur.

Since the end of the Brood Wars, and the Protoss race losing control of their home planet Aiur, their engineers have been hard at work to improve their powerful flagships. While no dramatic changes have taken place, the ships are now stronger and better shielded, as well as quicker to warp in. While none of the Carriers of StarCraft I had any armament besides Interceptors, there seems to be reports that such Carriers do exist.

[edit] Game Unit

The Carrier must build Interceptors before it can attack anything, and while this increases the cost of the attack force, it also means that any interceptor that successfully docks with the Carrier after it has been damaged will automatically get repaired.

Unlike the original, the Carrier in StarCraft II can set their Interceptor training to autocast.

[edit] StarCraft I Carrier

The older version of the Carrier is just like the new one dependent on additional support to be effective. A single Carrier can easily be overcome.

[edit] Named Carriers

[edit] Development

Carriers were originally cut from StarCraft II in favour of a Dark Templar ship that shot flying and returning shurikens at the enemies. In the end it was re-colored and renamed Carrier, mainly due to popular demand.

In early April 08, it was revealed as part of the Q&A Batch 34 the Carrier could produce Escorts but this was dropped in the Blizzcon 08 build.

[edit] Other Sources

There is also a StarCraft Board Game, which features Carriers as a powerful air unit for Protoss players.
