These massive, heavily armored combat ships are virtual flying fortresses, built to keep the peace and dominate the space lanes of the Koprulu sector. Outfitted with bristling laser batteries and thick neosteel armor, these imposing vessels are among the most powerful to be found in terran space. Many commanders use battlecruisers as their command vessels during extended campaigns. There are several examples of vessels specifically refitted for this purpose, such as General Duke’s Norad II and Norad III, as well as the battlecruiser Hyperion commanded by Jim Raynor.
The old Behemoth-class Battlecruiser has proven to be an enduring design when kept up to date with periodic upgrades. Even the more modern Hercules- and Minotaur-class ships have retained the distinctive hammerhead shape which so defines the classic Terran Battlecruiser. Research has led to the development of two alternative weapon upgrades that can be retrofitted into a Battlecruiser hull to supplement its already formidable armament.
The Yamato cannon is a terrifying weapon that uses an intense magnetic field to focus a nuclear detonation into a cohesive beam of energy. The cannon requires a huge reserve of energy to fire, but its effects on the target are impressive, to say the least. Plasma torpedoes give Battlecruisers an armament capable of saturating a target area with a lethal deluge of fire, ideal for breaking up oncoming attack waves or ravaging a defensive position. As with the Yamato cannon, a Battlecruiser needs to build up a sufficient reserve of energy to unleash a plasma torpedo bombardment.

The Battlecruiser is a mid to late game capital ship for the Terrans.

Along with the Yamato Cannon, Battlecruisers can now be fitted with Missile Barrage and Defensive Matrix. Each Battlecruiser will have their choice between the three upgrades and each choice is considered to be permanent. Also, in place of their one large, powerful laser, they now have four smaller lasers.
The Yamato Cannon returns untouched from the original. When upgraded, this ability allows the Battlecruiser to fire a burst of energy at the selected target to deal a massive amount of damage. The increased range of the Yamato Cannon makes it useful at destroying static defenses.
Missile Barrage is another optional upgrade that adds an anti-air armament to the Battlecruiser. When cast, this ability will unleash a volley of anti-air missiles on all enemy targets at, or nearby, the selected unit or area. This works best on tightly packed groups of flyers - such as the Zerg Mutalisk.
The final upgrade, Defensive Matrix, is a self-cast ability that adds a protective shield around the Battlecruiser. This shield will automatically deflect and reduce any incoming damage, and lasts until either the duration expires or the shield is destroyed.
[edit] Abiliities
Only one ability can be selected per Battlecruiser.

The massive Behemoth-class Battlecruisers are virtual flying fortresses, built to keep the peace within the Terran Sector. Outfitted with multiple burst-laser batteries for both anti-air and anti-ground support, these ships are easily the most powerful Colonial vessels.
They require a lot of resources and time to manufacture but a squadron can easily overwhelm the enemy. Due to these high requirements, a Battlecruiser should always be defended with other units when in small numbers and sent back for repair if heavily damaged.
The Battlecruisers high durability also makes them an excellent unit at absorbing enemy fire during sieges. Care must be taken to pull the Battlecruiser out of combat before they die, as it is far more cost effective to repair an injured Battlecruiser than to rebuild. They are also ideal candidates for the Science Vessels Defensive Matrix.
The Battlecruiser can be upgraded with a Yamato Cannon, an ability that fires a high damage blast at a targeted unit or building dealing 260 damage. The increased range of this blast makes it useful at taking down static defenses or "sniping" key units in the enemies army - such as Aribters, High Templar and Defilers.

[edit] Development
The Battlecruiser originally had a Plasma Torpedo upgrade that dealt damage to all ground targets within its area of effect. This was replaced by the Missile Barrage in mid June 2008 as part of the Q&A Batch 40.
Defensive Matrix was then introduced to the Battlecruiser as part of the Blizzcon 2008 build, thus providing a third upgrade option along with the Missile Barrage and Yamato Cannon.
