Blizzard confirms unannounced 4th project

2nd Jul 2008 01:30 AM GMT | Freelancer | 27 comments

Despite the fact that Blizzard is now working on 3 projects: Diablo 3, Starcraft 2 and World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, Blizzard have now confirmed that they are working on a 4th project.

Rob Pardo has confirmed that all the recent job listings for an "unannounced next-gen MMO" where/are not related to Diablo 3 or World of Warcraft. Direct result from this statement is that apparently this project is "a next Gen MMO", whatever that means.

A few months ago you offered a job on the official Blizzard webpage, Considering a next gen MMO... A community manager added that its about a game that hasn't been announced yet. Is there any new information on that or is Diablo the mentioned next gen MMO?

Rob Pardo: No, its obviously not, since it is not an MMO! We have another development team, that is...

So there is still one project?

Rob Pardo: Yea, there is still one "unknown" project...

If we combine this quote with another statement made by Blizzards Paul Sams, chief operating officer at Blizzard Entertainment:

Blizzard has very strong IP, but it also seems like all of it was created in the last century.

PS: First of all, that’s true that we’ve not introduced any new franchises this century. I think what it really comes down to is, we ask the teams what they want to make next.

I think the folks at our company are concerned, if they’re going to do a new franchise, that it be worthy – and that it be something that is equivalent or better than what we’ve done before, because they don’t want to do a franchise that’s not.

These are three of the best-selling franchises of all time, and very well-loved. So you’ve got a pretty high bar of trying to figure out what those franchises might be.

What I will say, though, is that the idea of a new franchise is very intriguing to employees of the company. Are we ever going to release a new one? I would absolutely say we will at some point. I just don’t know when that day will be quite yet.

So there you have it: Blizzard have another gem in the works and we can restart the speculation all over again. What could it be?

StarCraft MMO, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please!
I’m hoping for a new universe. I liked World of Warcraft, and I never purchased it because I liked it too much. It seems however that WoW put a capstone on the Universe and only prequels could be introduced to the universe now. Because you need defined boarders and sides in a MMO you can't introduce one into a universe with an active story. That’s why I hope this isn’t a Starcraft MMO. However WoW was introduced during the creation of Warcraft III. Diablo might be drawing to a close if history repeats itself.

There's speculation at the D2/D3 forums that D3 is the lead in for a Diablo MMO, supposedly supported by drink Blizzard employee comments :P Read this thread for what I was talking about...

I hope it isn't D MMO.

Regarding WoW: None have said that all new content must be prequels to WCU now. The MMO storyline continues, and when (in distant future) WarCraft 4 is released, it seems likely that they'll bring the whole world forward with big changes, like in the past games, and perhaps release WoW2.

I don't know about you guys, but i hope its a new franchise. It's just something about not knowing what to expect.

No mmo for diablo or starcraft please

Meh, betrayer =P

How can you NOT want a new SC MMO?

HEY! Did you move to Kent, Britain? =D

Chit pomfritt! I do actually want to see a SC MMO more than anything...

I'm still a bit sceptical that it'll be a SC MMO. Don't get me wrong, it'll be great if it is, but my interpretations of all this information is that it'll be a new franchise.

I know this isn't much to go on, but Paul Sams went through a lot of effort to talk about the whole concept behind starting up a new franchise and it just seems like it's something that might not have been said if this wasn't the case.

Of course this is all speculation at best. And if it turns out to be a SC or Diablo MMO - then great!

Haha! Betrayer i am not! I'm not really a fan of mmo's anyways...*starts up WoW*

However it would be interesting to see SC as an mmo but I'd rather dare not wish for it. :P

And no on your 3rd sentence. I didn't move and its not in britain haha. I live in Kent, WA(AMERICA!!!) that is until september. That's when i "move" to Seattle, WA(AMERICA!!!) and also when i start college. =)
Lucky swine. I’ve always wanted to live in Seattle or Portland for a year or two. The Northwest just sounds really nice.

Anyway I’ve got to say I resented Blizzard doing nothing but WoW for three years. I refuse to pay for a game that will ultimately destroy my social life; I have an addict personality type so MMO's are out of the question. Don’t get me wrong I’m stoked for StarCraft II and Diablo III; I just don’t want ten years to go by before I see Warcraft IV or a new franchise.

Maybe it's Warcraft IV!
I think some 10 million WoW players would riot. As we all know it’s not a Warcraft game unless city’s get sacked. I think shifting up the world when they are about to release another expansion might make people a little angry.

Can't you guys see it? It's perfectly clear - it's a new MMO that may have nothing to do with Star-, War-, or Diablocraft. Since Blizzard isn't very good with coming up with new franchises lately, there is only one option left:

World of The Lost Vikings!

Woot! I knew it!!! ;)

Seriously though... I would kinda like a Diablo MMO... SC MMO... eh... I could stand it... Another Warcraft game, I'd go to Blizz headquarters itself and smack them up a bit :P

I think it's high time they resurrected the Lost Vikings franchise, I'm just not sure a MMO would be the way to go about it.
The only way I see that happening is tactical RPG, Freedom Force style. Platformer has gone out of style decade ago.
Platformers haven't so much gone out of style; It’s just a very tired genera with little or no innovation in about a decade. Some people think Super Mario Galaxy had broken out of the stagnation. Others think that Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts will be the title to change it. I'm not sure about that Rare has yet to make a great game since joining Microsoft.

I can handle a Lost Vikings in the form of Mario Galaxy.

The step into 3D could make it difficult for one player to control all three characters, for example Olaf's shield defense might hard to align unlike in a 2D environment, but the developers are clever guys, I'm sure they'll work it all out if given the chance.

However this is about an unannounced MMO...
Yea... right.

Statistics say that it should be Galaxy of Starcraft, or something like that. There have been 4 Warcraft games and 3 datadiscs, 2 and a half Diablo games with a datadisk and only one and a half Starcraft games + Brood War. We need more sci-fi!

Edit:
BTW, not counting what's currently under development (SCII), there have been 2 The Lost Vikings games and only one Starcraft with a datadisk!

If I remember correctly its actually:
(release/in development)
Warcraft (7/1):
- Warcraft I
- Warcraft 2 + exp
- Warcraft 3 + exp
- World of Warcraft + exp

Starcraft (2/1):
- Starcraft + exp

Diablo (4/1)
- Diablo + exp
- Diablo 2 + exp

So I think you can look at the whole thing in a number of different ways. Its clear that its an MMO, and its not likely to be a Warcraft one. So that leaves Starcraft, Diablo or a new franchise. There seem to be sources that suggest a new franchise and there is the Ghost project that still "On hold" and not officially cancelled. They probably want to differentiate Diablo from Wow (like they did with Warcraft III and Starcraft) so its not likely it will be turned into an MMO anytime soon.

So I think based on that that its a Starcraft or New Franchise based MMO.

My thoughts exactly, and its a good point about Diablo. It's always made a point of separating itself from the other two major franchises in terms of gameplay, so there's probably a good chance it won't make the leap to a MMO like WoW did.

In saying that, I seem to remember some Warcraft III early alpha trying to be more like Diablo...

I think it would be very weird to see Blizzard get up on stage and announce a game for a new franchise that no-ones ever heard of.
I think the concept of a new franchise is hard to wrap our head around considering the last new franchise was Starcraft a little over 10 years ago. However Blizzard has got to be getting the impression that they need something new. We all know that Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3, from an optimistic standpoint, are at least a year or two away. I don’t think that Blizzard is going to turn right around once it’s RTS team is done with the Starcraft expansion and get to work on Starcraft 3. I also think another Warcraft, that is a progression of the story line, is unlikely; partially because of WoW also because I’m not entirely sure how you create an adversary that tops the Demonic Legions of the twisted neither hell bent on destroying the world. The question is where do you go and what realties are left?

Fantasy is off because Warcraft has that base covered, Gothic fantasy is covered by Diablo, and Science Fiction is covered by Starcraft. From there I guess the question becomes what is left? I myself can only suggest either a Mythic or Realistic world otherwise I’m at a loss.

I hope it's a new franchise, though it appears that it will be an MMO, so I'll be avoiding it at any rate
47 days ago
I don't know why, but it doesn't seem to me the best way to introduce a new franchise by a MMOPRG.
I never really thought about that to be honest. I guess starting a new franchise as a MMO wouldn't appeal to everyone.

Some players, as RussellMartin55 mentioned, might be more inclined to buy the new game if it was in a more familiar world.

Post-apocalyptic perhaps?
Post-Apocalyptic sounds really good. However I think it would have to be a RTS otherwise Bethesda and Fallout fans would have a ****-fit.
Hehe, could be, but if you make it RTS, wouldn't Warhammer nerds finally get such a big brainfart their heads will explode ^^

Well, that franchise isn't quite post-apocalyptic, but close enough. Would be cool if they revived the old "Mutant" IP from Aventyrsspel. The first true post-apocalyptic RPG ;)

No no, I am still on about the StarCraft MMO. Wonder what type of name they could have to get a cool acronym like "WoW". It's a very good one.

DisAPPointED! =(
